Loved how stylish it was, with the sound in particular. Nitpicky distinction, but kinda significant. If you’re considering a horse for equine competitions, the Thoroughbred breed should be at the top of your list. Thoroughbreds is a pitch black dark comedy in the vein of Heathers or Throw Momma from the Train. I think that was more or less the intention. Maybe just because Lily was willing to hang out with Amanda which was entertaining? Finally opening in theaters on Friday, “Thoroughbreds” (née “Thoroughbred”) tells the story of two high school girls in the kind of hyper-affluent … I think this shows Amanda clearly prefers a better well being for Lily than one for her stepdad. It turns out that Mark enrolled Lily in a school for troubled girls not because he was an evil, douchey stepdad, but because she actually was a troubled girl with psychopathic tendencies. I think Olivia Cooke is one of the finest actors working today, I loved the ensemble of this movie, and Anton Yelchin and Anya Taylor Joy knocked it out of the park. When that happens, it's almost impossible to repair. Even though Amanda introduced the idea of killing Marc, she wanted to do it "for the right reasons". I think a point of the movie is that she didn't have feelings, but was able to understand that other people did and so she reasons (but doesn't feel) that the world is a better place when other people are having the good feels. Known for their mastery of racing and jumping, their gait is powerful, exhibiting agility and speed. … But she's too afraid of admitting that. Thoroughbreds is a very unique movie that takes chances in ways you don't expect, and for that alone it warrants a recommendation from me. No one knows. Why the school for troubled teens vs regular ol' boarding school? The way he speaks to the mother (and grabs her arm!) Join our community of over 1,000,000 Screenwriters! Of the two main characters, Amanda is the psychopath, but Lily is the monster. That Anton Yelchin "i'm gonna be rich & successful one day" scene in the car was a fucking gut punch though. Amanda is brought to the home of her childhood friend Lily (Anya Taylor-Joy) so that she can tutor Amanda. Thoroughbred breeding theories are used by horse breeders in an attempt to arrange matings that produce progeny successful in horse racing.Bloodstock experts also rely on these theories when purchasing young horses or breeding stock. Lily, on the other hand, was very charming (a key trait of psychopaths) and seemingly normal, and the film only slowly revealed her psychopathic behaviour. The white horse looks more like any other regular horse I've seen compared to the arabian on the right. Let me start with the types of animals. And the revelation that Amanda was fake crying after Lily's dad's funeral: although Lily takes that as a betrayal, I interpreted that as Amanda understanding what Lily needed in that moment (a friend to cry with) and did what was necessary. Interesting. Film Review: ‘Thoroughbreds’. When Amanda practiced her smile in the mirror. the sound design in this movie is on point from everything to the chips. Sociopaths are easier to identify in their behaviour. There's a nice moment of surprise, but what does that surprise tell us about the world. I would argue one tiny point about Mark. I highly recommend anyone to listen to Cory Finley's Q&A podcast episode. Never is a shot wasted in this movie. But, if she really doesn't have feelings (which I believe), then why does she have this preference? This can mean that Thoroughbreds jump a bit more flat and quick, which may make them a little less careful. She gently pets him and then reaches into her bag and pulls out a knife. Amanda was the more advanced, i.e., had come to terms with her lack of empathy. Thoroughbred horses are superb athletes with remarkable speed and an extraordinary spirit. According to Wikipedia, the mallard is 50 to 65 cm long with a mass of 0.72 to 1.5… For instance, she killed her horse out of mercy, because she didn't want the horse to suffer the rest of its life with a broken leg. The cinematography, the twists and turns (literal and story-wise), and even just content wise, all signs point to there being a gigantic takeaway. The movie is brilliantly crafted and completely understands audience expectation. Thoroughbreds is a fascinating movie in a number of ways. When Lily’s at the spa with her mom waiting to see if Tim did the job, I initially thought the part where she sees Mark’s face on the pedicurist as really tacky and overdone, but then a few seconds later, it pays off by making you second guess if Mark’s actually back or just another hallucination. buuuuut can't forget Amanda was still super down to kill stepdad even though she realizes he's not evil or entirely deserving to die (she mentions this a few times). It knows the audience will see a stern step dad and automatically default to the idea that he's a jerk and side with Lily. That's just my interpretation. Remember the … I'm confused as to why people say their horses are "pure arabian" such as the girl on the white horse. The withers are high, the back short, the body lean and the chest deep. Loved the score so much. I don't believe that he came up w/ the idea to send Lily to that school b/c he saw correctly identified her as a psychopath. Thoroughbreds is a sparse, economic movie, the kind of film whose alternate life as a stage play is easy to imagine, down to the ominous allusion to … I can't remember the details as I heard it over several days, but I recall walking away with an even better appreciation of the film. Do you think Mark is a sociopath? Surprised at how violent and bleak it got at the end but it paid off. Psychopaths are less likely to form any real bonds and are more likely to develop shallow relationships for their own benefit, and manipulate others through their charm and social skills. Remember the scene where they're discussing the answers to an SAT question, and every answer is a double entendre for the characters' emotions and motivations? I loved this movie for all of the reasons others have said, but one thing I haven't seen mentioned is how tight the writing is. Sure it was not a quick death, but she tried to end its suffering as quickly as she could. First of all, in clinical psychology, the distinction between psychopathy and sociopathy is not even formally recognized. Warning! What kind of horse is it? Can't wait to listen to this to get me through my work day tomorrow. “Thoroughbreds” is classically Hitchcockian in its smoldering homicidal tendencies, yet bracingly current with the spot-on casting of Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke as childhood friends who reconnect and reveal the internal damage they’ve become skilled at suppressing. Horses in Red Dead Redemption 2 are both an animal species and the main form of transport. The sound of the exercise machine upstairs, someone tapping a pen against a table, the stone chess pieces being moved. While both lack empathy, psychopaths experience a lot less guilt, and are concerned only about themselves. This is really compelling, but was there really any evidence of that?! That being said, I read a thread on which some redactor was saying they think he acted that way because he knows Lily messed with his bike, but knows the Mom won't believe him. The bones actually bends before it breaks (plastic deformation) so even if you tried to repair it, it would be bent. The Turning carefully adapts many elements of Victorian and Gothic horror, as it's based off The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, and updates the tale for a '90s setting but leaves the ending wide open for audience interpretation.. Your bond with your horse represents trust and understanding. I loved how it was payoff for the multiple scenes where we hear the stepfather's exercise machine, and to suddenly hear it stop signifying that he was dead. I’ve seen the movie 3 times now, and I know Amanda wouldn’t lie about the horses death... but the horse looks completely fine in the opening scene. Earlier this week, I saw in an unofficial discussion thread that people had a hard time believing Amanda would willfully take the blame for Lily murdering her stepfather. Is it the same height with a duck in the normal position or with the neck stretched out? They can be captured and broken out in the wild, purchased from stables or acquired by more underhanded means. I really really enjoyed this movie and I don't know that I would have if it hadn't gotten so violent and bleak at the end. I saw this very stoned and was kind of entranced by the character portrayals. I liked the movie. You can tell that the writer/director is a really skilled playwright. That's all fantastic, but the problem is that we're not getting anything out of that. The whole time it held on the shot of Amanda on the couch I had no idea what to expect: whether she'd really go through with it, and even if she did, whether the stepfather would overpower her anyway. Amanda says it's because she has no reason to live, but I just don't buy that, because Olivia Cooke pauses before saying it, like she's calculating and hesitating, and when the words came out, I just wasn't convinced. One thing that is really interesting about the shooting style at the opening of the movie is how Cory Finley uses a standard shot then reverse-shot dialogue technique in order to place Amanda and Lily on opposite sides of the frame and to separate them as much as humanly possible in the frame. Thoroughbreds are good horses; they have superb agility, fantastic speed, and an exceptional spirit. If Amanda had feelings, maybe she would've loved Lily so Amanda would take the fall for her, but I don't think that's the case. The trailer paints a picture of a movie that contrasts the "girl who feels nothing" against "the girl who feels everything", but its really a contrast of sociopath (Amanda) vs psychopath (Lily). Then when she comes back in the room, the lack of camera movement, cuts, or music made it feel so coldly real despite the rest of the movie being so stylized. he was a bit stern, but ultimately he never did anything worth hating). Think Mean Girls filtered through the bleakly humorous noir lens of the Coen brothers. I interpreted it as there's multiple types of sociopath. She would've have been better off in this case (not sure it is the case tho) to convince Lily not to kill stepdad. While Amanda was clearly intended as a textbook psychopath (ASPD), with Lily, there is little to no reason to believe she is mentally deficient or ill in any way. And I think you can see this in Olivia Cooke's performance throughout. Photo courtesy of thoroughbredclassic.org. While I agree that with Lily he's just stern, and I think it's very intentional we never see him hit her mother, I do think he is at least a total dick. Reminded me of Punch-Drunk Love. I can't remember if we learn that her history involves any serious behavioral issues... And perhaps I'm not giving Mark enough credit. Thoroughbreds are feisty, athletic horses that can be used for multiple purposes. Summary: Two upper-class teenage girls in suburban Connecticut rekindle their unlikely friendship after years of growing apart. Lily is struggling to get there and rejected all notions that she might be slightly like Amanda. What a masterful use of sound. This breed has much success in disciplines such as dressage and show jumping. The sound design in this movie made it for me. I disagree emphatically. If you follow the rabbit hole of Amanda really not having feelings, I think there are a few little inconsistencies of character which don't detract from the movie, but it makes me appreciate characters that stay true all the way down. (Also provides a unique "get-in" story on how Finley found himself in the position to direct this as his first film). And it's not like it presents itself as a film without much to say. Yet despite all these comparisons, Finley has created a film that feels original and alive. Together, they hatch a plan to solve both of their problems-no matter what the cost. A school for troubled teens would be the perfect solution b/c besides meeting his criteria for getting and keeping her gone girl, he can rationalize to his wife that they're actually doing Lily a kindness by getting Lily the help she so desperately needs. Despite being in a much better position than Amanda to be a good person, Lily ends up in a dark, twisted, and evil place purely through her own choices. When I think of duck, I think of this: This is a male and female mallard duck. Psychopaths show no remorse, as evidenced by Lily's last scene when she said she threw away Amanda's letter. The sound of the exercise machine was so genius! So glad I saw this in a theater to get the full experience. Her animal cruelty incident, was done solely to put the horse out of its misery, not for her own satisfaction. I think there are subtle hints throughout the movie that Amanda DOES care about Lily's well-being, like Amanda saving Lily from drowning herself. I think the subtext of that line is "Because I care about you." But I digress- sorry- my point was that I think Mark is so selfish and apathetic towards Lily that he just figured out the quickest, easiest way to get her out of the picture and in such a way that would pretty much guarantee that she couldn't easily leave the place or get kicked out and sent back home. I think Thoroughbreds are great in any discipline, their willingness is the best reason to ride one.” 3) Barrel Racing. Sociopaths have difficulty in forming attachments, but some may be able to become attached to certain persons. I really enjoyed the movie too, but I think one of it's weaknesses is that I didn't find much depth. It was so ominous and cringy and it immediately made me sympathize with Lilly's hatred of him. Horses have a built shock absorber, called the frog and when they wear shoes it doesn't do it's job. Thanks! When horses wear shoes holes are being created that allow bacteria and fungi in that weakens the hoof. when she's concerned about his bike accident is enough to convince me of that, if not that he's at least somewhat abusive. Of course his monologue about Lily is spot-on, but I think it's possible that they're both assholes. When Amanda starts to chug the roofied drink, Lily asks why she is agreeing to this. A photograph has gone viral on Reddit of the burial of a 2,000-year-old Thracian chariot with horses and a dog. Amanda was clearly able to form an attachment with the horse and with Lily (possibly because they used to ride together). The soundtrack is likewise intent on imbuing the viewer with a certain uneasiness throughout. This reminds of that quote Fincher said about the difference between films and movies. I feel a bit differently about Mark than you do. A basic understanding of these theories can also help the racing public understand a horse's theoretical genetic potential. Create a legacy by building a star-studded stable of winning racehorses.
